Nine years after the earthquake that destroyed it, the Basilica of St. Benedict was reopened in October 2025. It was here, in the year 2000, that the monks of the Abbey of San Benedetto in Monte first established their presence in Norcia.
The Archdiocese of Spoleto–Norcia has assigned the Basilica to the activities of the local parish. The monks of San Benedetto in Monte have no role in the administration of the Basilica or in the liturgical activities held within it. The monks are glad that the people of Norcia—and every pilgrim who comes to the city—can once again pray in the Basilica and in its crypt, which preserves the remains of the birthplace of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica.
